The technical diffiiculties referred to below have been at least partially resolved – my trusty old laptop is back from hospital and seems to be working again… It seemed to be having critical graphic issues that were preventing Vista from loading. It was diagnosed with a damaged motherboard, but when I asked the guy what might have caused it (y’know, to avoid repeating the trick), he suggested I might have ‘put it down on a corner’. I’m not sure that’s a thing you can actually do, but in any event he was able to repair it so how and ever.
It’s been carried around the world and has been through so many airport/security scanners that I’m surprised it’s lasted as long as it has. the only problem now is that Vista had to re-installed, so I have to put everything back on and download all the service packs and updates from Microsoft all over again – Zzzzz.
